My Family and Other Animals

Recently came across some images of a lovely vintage-inspired home, photographed by Carlota Santamaria for Apartmento Magazine. Immediately, the images called to mind one of my favorite books as a child, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell (author and naturalist), which BBC brilliantly adapted into a TV movie.
The book is an autobiographical account of the author’s childhood, his hilarious, rather dysfunctional family, slews of pets (both domestic and otherwise) and life during a sojourn on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939.
After a short exploration of the interwebs, my little revelation was validated. Check out the scenes below from My Family and Other Animals:

Don’t you love the similarities? I adore the shabby vintage furnishings, lush, sprawling plant-life, elements of the explorer/naturalist and semi-chaos of both rooms.
Fancy a nice super at sea?

Also, I didn’t appreciate the fabulous fashion in this movie until now. Can’t you see Margot Durrell (Tamzin Merchant)’s bathing suit and hat flying off the shelves at Anthropologie?

And Larry Durrell (Matthew Goode) is looking quite the haute hipster in his mustard button-down + sweater combo….and the dangling cigarette certainly helps.

For your enjoyment, here’s a 10 minute clip of the film.
