“How To Dress for Success” by Edith Head
My mother sent me this lovely and amusing post from Fashion Illustrations of excerpts from Edith Head’s 1967 book, “How to Dress for Success”. Miss Head was a costume designer and style icon, dressing stars from Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn.
A few of these pages (“How to Dress to Get a Man…and Keep Him”) may make your tummy muscles cringe a tad… I left out most of the images that had that effect on me…one in particular of a girl looking at herself in the mirror with a paper bag over her head - ugh! (Can’t you hear Joan Holloway’s line in the TV show Mad Men: “Go home, take a paper bag, cut some eyeholes out of it. Put it over your head, get undressed and look at yourself in the mirror. Really evaluate what your strengths and weaknesses are. And be honest.”) They had it pretty spot on in that show, didn’t they?
That aside, I thought these were fun, interesting snippets from a very different time. And I just love how comical some of these are — gotta love the lady shopping for egg plant in a bikini…and don’t you wish you had some “Successories” in your wardrobe? ;)
